St. Mary’s Academy is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of its Math Department, whose students and club members recently showcased their excellence at the Xavier University Spring Math Fair held on April 12, 2025.
SMA students swept the upper grades competition for 11th and 12th graders, earning first through third place honors in the Xavier Math Competition:
In addition to individual academic success, the SMA Quizbowl Team — made up of Tatum Williams and Maelyn Leonard, both juniors — brought home First Place in the team competition.
The SMA Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta also received major national recognition, earning the Lisa C. Herron Hesson Community Award, which honors chapters that actively promote the inclusion of underrepresented students in mathematics. This distinguished award includes a $2,500 grant for the SMA chapter and a $5,000 scholarship awarded to senior Ciara Lewis for her outstanding contributions and leadership.
As a result of this honor, the SMA Mu Alpha Theta Chapter has been invited to attend the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention, where they will represent the school on a national stage. Compliments of a $4,000 Convention Grant awarded to the team, students will attend the convention for free.
These accomplishments highlight the strength, talent, and dedication of SMA’s math students and faculty. Congratulations to all the scholars, coaches, and advisors involved for raising the bar and continuing the school’s legacy of academic excellence.
